I have a confession to make. I have been resisting creating an EFT product even though I get asked for one frequently. After hearing myself yesterday explain to Till Schilling, the creator of Tappy Bear, why I’m best working with people and need to interact to shine (Resistance. Blah, blah, blah.), I decided it was time to do some inner work.
There is an old folk saying that “curiousity killed the cat”. It’s wrong. Curiousity doesn’t kill cats – it melts resistance. So, I asked myself, “What is up with the fighting?” I tapped on the feelings. It turns out that EFT founder Gary Craig was right. The results I got made my jaw drop.
Turns out, I had a belief system that went like this: “Products are B-O-R-I-N-G. I don’t want to be boring. So I can’t create a product.”
As I released my “I don’t want to be boring” issue, new thoughts started flowing. EFT is a very funny looking yet very effective thing we use to clear up some of the stickiest issues in our lives. Lots of material for playing with the paradox there. What if I wrote an EFT manual that was fun and effective? I instantly noticed one of the best indicators of high vibrational states of being – a smile.
Then a new limiting belief popped up (goodbye smile). Would anyone actually want to buy my irreverent EFT manual? I’ll spare you the details of the self-worth issues behind that question. I’ll give you the 140 character, Twitter version. I tapped some more. Darn EFT stuff worked again.
I remembered this really cool thing called a blog where I could get feedback from cool people like you. I am thinking of writing a manual called From Chaotic to Clarity: How to Use EFT and Humor Attraction to Clear Overwhelm. It would start out something like this:
What you hold in your hands is the world’s first highly irreverent and effective EFT for Overwhelm manual. And, the truth is, this manual almost never got written.
From there, I would go on to share how I combine EFT and humor to help clients shift from feelings of overwhelm into states of being much clearer and more able to create the lives they want. I would love to hear your thoughts in the form of a comment below. Thanks in advance!
One of the Law of Attraction tools that is most helpful to my clients is the The Emotional Scale. It’s from the Abraham-Hicks books, Ask And It Is Given. I often have client’s print out a copy and post it in a place where they will see it several times a day – like their desk, on the door of the fridge or a bathroom mirror. It’s a great tool to become more mindful of our daily energetic state.

Overwhelm. It’s everywhere these days. It’s one of the top stumbling blocks to success and one of the biggest issues my new clients come to me with.
Honestly, I have had a pretty intimate relationship with overwhelm myself. For instance, I remember the time early in my coaching business where I found myself standing in the hallway between the office and the kitchen. I had gone back and forth 4 times and couldn’t remember why. I couldn’t even remember if I wanted to be in the kitchen or the office.
Today, I can look back at myself as an overwhelmed newbie with compassion. I can tell that story with a smile on my face and see how I have grown. I appreciate that I haven’t felt that kind of overwhelm for a long time.
In a session with a client recently, she started at an overwhelm level of 9 on a ten point scale. Thanks to EFT and a priority setting exercise, she was feeling “clear and great” by the end of the session. Her overwhelm feeling was almost gone and she was excited to move forward with the energy of clarity.
Then she asked me, “Paul, how did do you get rid of overwhelm – for good?”
Her question got me thinking about the journey from Overwhelmics Anonymous candidate to being able to maintain more positive emotional states over time. In addition to my own experience, I thought about the experience of successful coaches I know – like Jen Blackert, Chip Engelmann, Jeanette Maw and Gurutej who took part in last weeks Spiritual Tools that WORK series.
The truth is that successful people don’t feel overwhelmed very often. Why? Do successful people have a overwhelm resistance strand on their DNA? Are they born without the capacity to feel overwhelm? Of course not.
As I explored what’s common about the successful people I know, I saw that there are 3 things that successful people know how to do that prevents them from getting stuck in overwhelm. I’d like to share with you the 3 Keys to Saying Goodbye to Overwhelm- For Good:
- Create positive thoughts – on a daily basis. Bill Baren is an executive and life coach whose business is so full that he has hired 4 other coaches to keep up with demand. When asked about his secret to success, Bill says it’s daily journaling. Each day he writes about what he appreciates about his clients and what he’s learned. He says it keeps his attitude exceptionally positive. My Mastermind partner, Sejual Shah uses EFT and attraction principles in the same manner. While the tools may differ, successful people take responsibility for creating positive thoughts and a focused mind on a daily basis.
- Cultivate a service mindset. Susan Evans is the founder of Helpingpreneur.com. She has built a $250,000 per year business on the foundation of helping business owners help more people. When you make a deeper commitment to service, you will start to see ways to leverage your knowledge to help more people. Three examples of how my clients are doing this: blogging, creating products, and offering group programs. When you help more people, you feel better and your income naturally rises.
- Develop a success team. Successful people know the value of a support network. From Mastermind groups to online communities to individual coaching, there are support options for people at every level of the process. There is a direct relationship between feelings of overwhelm and disconnect. If you are regularly feeling overwhelmed, I invite you to increase the amount of support you have for your goals.
Though they seem simple, these three strategies will help you say goodbye to overwhelm – for good. Try making a commitment to practice these three steps for one month. I’d love to hear what happens for you.
Today’s an exciting day – it the birthday of a new series call Spiritual Tools that WORK. It’s a week of free calls that my friend Chip Engelmann and I put together. Why did we do it?
There are lots of spiritual people doing great work in the world. Yet, many of us don’t know each other and are plugging along quietly doing our work. We see our clients, run our groups, and write our books without often having the time to connect with the larger spiritual community. It became clear to me that it would be a fun and useful service to bring together some of the best of these people and create a way for more people to hear about the healing work that is happening in our world. Thus, the Spiritual Tools that WORK series was born.
The first round of the series starts October 5th and goes through October 8th. Each call happens at 8:30pm Eastern , 5:30 Pacific. Here’s the presenters for each night:
On Monday, October 5th at 8:30pm Eastern, Chip Engelmann is hosting a call on “Tapping into the Light.” Chip’s a very knowledgeable man who’s going to be teaching you his new meridian tapping technique that clears blocks much faster than traditional EFT and MTT.
On Tuesday, October 6th, Jen Blackert is hosting a call on “Eliminating Fear”. Jen is a very successful coach and online business owner who uses spiritual tools to clear fear quickly and allow you to quickly move towards your success goals.
On Wednesday, October 7th, Gurutej Khalsa is hosting a call on “More Energy, What Women Truly Need.” Gurutej has been practicing Kundalini Yoga for almost 40 years and has worked in big corporations like Disney. She has a wonderful vision for women and how you can use spiritual tools to support success.
On Thursday, October 8th, Jeanette Maw is hosting a call on “The Art of Vibration Management.” Jeanette is a master Law of Attraction coach and will show you how to deliberate create your vibration so you can attract more of what you want.
I have personally spent time with each of these people on the phone. This is a group of skilled coaches with vision. I invite you to go to the Spiritual Tools that WORK signup page and sign up to join this group of amazing spiritual leaders. I think you will be very pleased with what you learn.
BTW, I’ll be part of the next rounds of presenters in November. Stay tuned for more info.
One of my main goals for creating this site is to advocate for authenticity – I want you to believe in your bones that it is possible to be a fun, authentic and spiritual human and make plenty of money. What does this have to do with sugar water? Let me explain ..
This morning I met with Sejual Shah, a wonderful EFT practitioner – her site is www.healthyinmind.com – for our weekly Mastermind session. It was my turn and I brought up fear I was feeling about a project I’ll be announcing soon. This project is going to mean MUCH more visibility for me and my business.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on this fear. Sejual helped me clarify and clear what was going on.
When I was a kid, we lived a few miles from the headquarters from one of the largest soft drink companies in the world. Also as a child, my father worked in a company whose major source of income was tobacco products. Many of my friends parents worked in environments like this.
Even then, I felt strongly that making tons of money selling soda (yep, that’s the sugar water) and other products that damaged peoples health was out of integrity. Looking back from today’s vantage point, I realize that early in life I took a spiritual vow to value integrity over money.
While I have done LOTS of work on allowing money and my spiritual beliefs to live well together, this new venture I’m embarking on brought up this theme at a new level. While most of me is excited and aligned with increased success, I realized that there was a part of me feeling afraid I might “step out of integrity as I step into the limelight.”
Four things I learned about the dynamics of increasing success from this experience:
- At the threshold of each new level of success, we are likely to experience new issues. This is normal – when we come to the edge of our known world, it’s our nervous system’s job to send out a signal. It’s a sign saying, “You are leaving the known, are you sure you want to do this?”
- Spiritual people often take vows that impact our relationship with money. My mostly unconscious vow had been to value integrity more than I value money. Thanks to today’s session, I now believe that I can continue to find more and more ways to make money with the power of my integrity.
- Without clearing, #1 and #2 often sabotage our success. My own life story prior to energy psychology is a tale of good intentions sabotaged by the above. Most of my clients have similar stories.
- Support is essential. Tiger Woods had a coach before he became a golf sensation and having great support is significant part of why he became the golfer he is. Successful people almost always have a combination of mentors, coaches, mastermind groups, prosperity buddies, etc. I would like to invite you to explore the level of success support you have in your life.
No matter where you are in your success journey, understanding these 4 dynamics will increase your ability to manifest success. I’d love to hear your thoughts about how you have seen these and other dynamics work in your life. Please comment below and thank you in advance for sharing.
Let’s face it, spiritual people can get pretty off center when it comes to money. Many traditions have strong teachings about the dangers of money. Even those of us who don’t follow a particular path are influenced by powerful archetypes like the begging monk and the rich person who lost her soul (remember Scrooge?).
An example of this tension in the Judeo-Christian tradition is this line from the Book of Mathew in the Bible:
And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
These kinds of sentiments exist in most spiritual traditions. When spiritual people begin to look at increasing the success and abundance in their lives, there are almost always limiting beliefs like these to clear. The question is – how?
Tailenders and your success dreams
Those of you who have been following me for awhile know that I’m a big fan of the energy psychology tool called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). If you don’t know EFT, you can learn more about it at the post called EFT Tapping Points or by going to the main EFT website, www.emofree.com.
In EFT, there is a energetic dynamic called the “tailender”. Tailenders are self-sabotage messages that usually live below conscious awareness. You can also think of them as the hidden, “Yeah, but ..” part of affirmation statements. Because they have been operating for a long time and often get passed down through the generations, they are usually often more powerful than consciously chosen positive thoughts.
How EFT can heal the divide
The problem for spiritual people is that we often have tailenders that limit our ability to allow financial abundance into our life. Here’s a tapping sequence for clearing this:
Karate Chop: Even though I have this message that spiritual people can’t be wealthy, I’m willing to be a little kinder and more gentle with myself anyway.
Karate Chop: Even though my spirituality is very important to me and I don’t know how to be both spiritual and have abundance, I love and accept myself anyway.
Karate Chop: Even though I don’t know how to have both a deep spiritual life and plenty of money, I’m open to the possibility that there is way I could have both.
Eyebrow: This divide between money and spirituality.
Side of the eye: I don’t know how to have both.
Under the eye: I learned that it’s difficult to have both money and spirituality.
Under the nose: No wonder this has been a source of struggle for me.
Chin: I haven’t known how to have plenty of money and still be spiritual.
Collarbone: I’m choosing to forgive myself for my past struggles about this.
Under the arm: I’m curious if there is a way I could have an easier relationship between and money and spirituality in my life.
Once you’ve tapped on limiting beliefs that create the tension between money and spirituality, you’re ready to tap on opening up to a different kind of relationship between them.
The Solution Sequence
Eyebrow: I’m starting to open up to a new relationship between money and spirituality in my life.
Side of the eye: What if there is a way that I can have plenty of both in my life?
Under the eye: It would be nice to have more ease around money.
Under the nose: I’m curious if there was more ease between money and my spirituality, what would happen in my finances?
Chin: I wonder if I could find more ease between money and spirituality?
Collarbone: I’m choosing to explore a more harmonious relationship between money and spirituality in my life.
Under the arm: It feels good to know that I can have both more money and a deep spiritual awareness in my life.
One of the more exciting spiritual developments recently is that there are a growing number of teachers that feel that a harmonious relationship between money and spirituality is allowable. Some even teach that it’s fun. Two books – from very different traditons – that explore this are Geshe Michael Roach’s book The Diamond Cutter and Ester and Jerry Hick’s book, Money and the Law of Attraction. If you have found other resources that have helped you heal the money and spirituality divide, I’d really appreciate it if you’d mention them in a comment.
I just got off the phone with Chip Engelmann, an EFT and Law of Attraction Coach and a friend of mine. In addition to planning an exciting teleclass series we’ll be offering soon, we also spoke about the most frequent request we both hear in terms of EFT for Abundance – that is “How do I know what to tap on?” It got me thinking that about the need for a blog post that gives you some insight into how experienced EFTers help their clients zero in on specific abundance blocks.
Here’s the three best ways to help you know what to tap on when you’re using EFT for Abundance:
1) Using the Tailender Technique. In EFT language, your tailenders are the “Yeah, but ..” part of an affirmation. In other words, they are like an industrial strength rubber band tied around your waist that holds you back from making progress towards what you want. In the Using the Tailender Technique, you deliberate explore your tailenders and find the issues that need clearing by doing so.
Start by finding a clear money affirmation that is a) believable and b) exciting to you. For instance, “I easily and consistently make $100,000 per year.” Once you have your affirmation, take 3 deep breaths. Notice how your body feels and what thought are going through your mind. This is your baseline.
Now, say your affirmation out loud, “I easily and consistently make $100,000 per year.” Notice what happens in your body. Say it out loud again. This time notice what thoughts go through your mind. The body sensations and thoughts that happen after you say the affirmation usually have the energy of constriction. These are your tailenders, the things that block you from creating more abundance.
For a moment, I ask you to relax your resistance towards your tailenders. Be willing to explore them. What does that body sensation remind you of? Who does that negative thought bring to mind? Through a curious exploration of your tailenders, you can find the core issues that are limiting your ability to be more successful in an authentic way. Once you know the core issues, you on them.
2) Clear by the Numbers. Chip Engelmann has developed a technique where he has clients explore their feelings about making different amounts of money. In this approach, you start with an amount that feels comfortable to you. For instance, suppose you currently earn $30,000 per year. You would state, “I easily and consistently earn $30,000 per year.” Then, you notice how that feels. You keep increasing the amount until you notice some discomfort. For instance, suppose $40,000 feels comfortable but you notice a feeling of “I don’t think so” when you say “I easily and consistently earn $50,000 per year.” Explore that feeling of “I don’t think so”. Notice where you feel it in your body and who it reminds you of. Then tap on these issues.
3) Clearing your Money Matrix. My favorite way to find your blocks is Money Matrix work. Your Money Matrix is the energetic web that determines your current relationship with money. It is a combination of the important feelings, beliefs and relationships that you have with money. When we are not experiencing the kind of success that we want, it’s often because our Money Matrix is being influenced by negative energies.
Below is the simple 4 step exercise I use with clients to help them understand their current energetic relationship with money and to know what to tap on when applying EFT for abundance. Here are the four steps:
- Take 3 clearing and centering breaths. The purpose of this is to help you relax your system and increase your ability to be aware. With each breath, find yourself becoming a bit more relaxed and more of attention available in the present moment.
- Imagine that you are in a room with money. It’s a simple room, comfortably furnished. Notice where money is in relationship to you. Is it to one side, in the front, outside the room, etc? Take a minute to notice what you what you see in your mind’s eye.
- Notice who or what else is in the room with you. After you have a sense of who and what these presences are, notice where these other presences (people or things) are in relationship to you and to money. For instance, one client felt a 3 inch plate glass wall that was between her and money. Notice what you what you see in your mind’s eye.
- Notice the feelings in your body about your current Money Matrix. Your Money Matrix is encoded into the cells of your body. Paying attention to the feeling in the snapshot you see is a powerful way to access your code. What do you notice in your body and on a feeling level as you view this picture in your mind’s eye? Once you know what your current Money Matrix looks like, you can use EFT to clear what is in the way and allow money to come much more easily into your life.
It’s rare that a mechanical application of EFT leads to abundance results. These three techniques about allow people who are new to EFT for abundance or haven’t yet seen the success they want to get a much better picture of what to tap on. Because abundance is a whole lot easier to move towards without the Great Wall of China in the way.
Like many people, when I first came to EFT, my life was far from peaceful. I was going through a seperation, wasn’t sleeping well, and had a range of physical symptoms that the medical system didn’t know what to do with. I tried many things to get rid of these problems and symptoms.
None of them worked very well.
Recently, I’ve had a number of new clients who have come with a range of physical symptoms. They too have tried western medicine, acupuncture, bodywork, chiropractic, and energy healers. One man came to me after trying 4 other EFT therapists with no success. The common theme that all these healers have shared is trying to get rid of the problem.
